24.05.2009 - 12:08: Window crank clearance Tutorial | Citation Citation

This is my Window crank clearance tutorial. Sorry, some pics are a little blurry.

You will need;

1. 3 window cranks
2. Small phillips or flat head screwdriver
3. Pliers
4. Butane torch
5. Two 5/16 screws phillips head about ¾ inch
6. Two nuts for said screws
7. Lubricant
8. Drill
9. Drill bit just bigger than 5/16
10. Vice grips
11. Grinder wheel
12. Vice
13. Rubber mallet
14. Large phillips screw driver
15. Patience
16. Small drill bit

First thing is to take the small screwdriver and pop the little cap out of the rubber knob.

Now take a small drill bit and drill out the back of the knob.

Then get a drill bit just bigger than 5/16 and drill the hole out in the crank,

Put the crank in a vice with a towel on the finished side. Now I didn't show this in these pics, but I recomend taking a small torch and heating up where you're going to bend it. (the reason it's not shown is that I didn't do it on this one and I broke it (: )

Now take you rubber mallet and tap away until you get the angle you need. You have to hit it fairly hard, but don't whack it.

If you have already done one, compare them.

Continue massaging as needed.

Once you have the lower bend that you like, now you need to do the upper side. Here is where I really recommend heat. (this is the step I broke it and had to steel the one out of my Duster) Get an Idea of where to bend and how far off of your first one.

Hold the backside with your hand and lightly tap it with the mallet.

Compare to the first one or get it to where you like it.

The chrome will crack a little, but polish it up and it will look okay.

Now take your screw and put it in your vise grips.

Go to the grinder wheel and take some of the threads off as close to the head as you can, this way they wont interfere with the rubber knob as much.

Take the rubber knob and use the same drill bit you used to drill out the crank and drill out the whole. Then hone out the knob so that the head of the screw fits better.

You will want about a 1/4 inch sticking out.

Now take the screw out and using your pliers, mess up the threads just a little bit. Not so much that the nut wont screw on, but enough that it is tuff to turn it by hand.

Assemble the knob and crank. Put some lube in the knob then tighten the screw snug. Use some lock tight on the threads.
I took a screwdriver and put two dimples in the back of the bolt and nut just to help them stay together even more.

Be sure to put your cap back on.

How do they look?

Jeremy

Ya, I sent you an email. Let me know where to ship these ones. Just pay shipping. They are not show quality, but they work. The chrome does get little stress cracks when you do this. Thanks, Jeremy
